I don't have a midi set up, but last I checked, you had to be really precise with your playing (no speeding up or slowing down) to get a usable output. It has been years, though, since I experimented, and a lot has changed. Doing it longhand has been a good exercise, though. Forces me to pay attention in ways that I never have as a "by ear" musician. I may even learn to count!
