Happy NaNoWriMo, Everyone!

Well, until about 7 pm tonight, I had a word count of 0. It's a bit better now. I'm starting to get into my character's head space, and to explore what's kind of different about this sister of hers. I have spent the last couple of weeks using a Book in a Month Kit haphazardly, trying to brainstorm key scenes and story arc, something I have never done in a previously attempted story.

The initial idea came from an early morning dream-- the kind you have after you get up to pee at 4 am and come back to bed after to sleep a couple more hours. Or the kind you have in the 9 minutes between when the alarm goes off the first time and when it goes off again after you hit snooze. I forget which one this was. But it's the kind where you're just awake enough to be able to somewhat shape what happens.

Anyway, I'll share more about it later. I'm kind of excited about trying to create an actual story and not 50K words of brainstorming and wittering and freewriting. I still may spend some time on WIPs if I get stuck; might as well make the discipline of the month count for something. But I really hope I can get this story to go where I want it to.

Hugs and good thoughts to friends who are embarking on the madness this year. And if you aren't-- why not? It's still the first day. Write something!

Happy NaNo right back at ya! I was debating whether to do it this year or not, but after the success I had with the story I wrote for a ficathon earlier, I figured I might as well keep trying to write stuff. Last night I had about a hundred words, which I then deleted in favor of doing an outline, lol. I'm not worried, yet, about word counts, though.

And I know exactly what you mean about the dream thing. Last night I dreamed about zombie angels. I find with unusual dreams, though, it's actually the emotion of the dream that makes me the most interested in it, not just the subject matter.

You should keep a "Nano Wordcount" document separate from your actual story; then if you decide to delete words, they still count for the validator later. I also do my writing in a "November 1" or whatever document each day, and copy and paste that into the master story doc and the word count doc. As far as I'm concerned, outlines, story wittering, character sketches and freewriting where you say "I don't know what to write" a hundred times-- it all counts.

I don't think any of it's cheating though-- the freewriting and wittering often help me see some new aspect of my story that I can then explore with real, you know, story.

Zombie angels, huh? That's different. Wee Hob is writing a zombie novel this year. Sort of Romeo and Juliet without the romance or (hopefully) tragic end. Two boys become friends from opposite cultures. How the human manages not to get infected I'm not clear on yet. But he worked on it after school for hours yesterday and is off today. It'll be next to see where he goes with it.

Come to some of Kentucky Elsewhere's virtual write ins if you like. The chat room address is on the region page. I'll be in there most nights procrastinating.

Hey!! Update your wordcount, woman. And come visit us in the chatroom. You can cheer us on even if you're not officially taking the plunge. (I really want to read about zombie angels though. And wee hob may take this dare I found on the young writer's site: give your antagonist a cute little brain eating zombie kitten as a pet.)

Hope everything is going well.

I assume it's a bit late now for chat? Sorry, it's been kinda crazy here and homework has taken quite a bit of my free time. I think I have writer's block, lol.

howdy, Padre! Are you writing this year?

Not this year. The wife and eldest child are both doing it, leaving me to tend the home fires.
