Want to read a gem of a fic? No Giles anywhere to be seen, but a really cool little character study with an interesting structure? Then go check out [livejournal.com profile] rahirah 's There Should Have Been Trumpets.

I'd be interested to hear the reactions to it. She worried that it wasn't really a "Story" per say, and yeah, there's no conflict/ rising action, climax, etc. What would this be classified as? I dunno. It just works for me, and the structure is part of what makes it work.

That, and, the characterization is so skillfully done in this little space, I feel like I know this OC, and I have read None of the other works in this series, or if I have, I don't remember this guy at all. There's something distilled about it-- like poetry without the additional verse structure.

And hey, did I mention? Short.

Go read. enjoy.

I dunno how useful definitions & classifications are, but my idea of of "story" is "something that can happen only once". So a static vignette, or a "this happens every day" thing is not a "story" exactly. Still fiction, still often worthwhile, but without a moment of change. Whatever "change" is.

That's a neat character piece. Not a story, but entirely worthwhile nonetheless. Neat! :)
