hobgoblinn: (might be a writer)
Saw this on the Sunnydale Herald today and signed up. The finish-a-chapter ficathon sounds like a fantastic way to build/ keep momentum going, but even if it's not, I'm in. Ch 8 of In Loco has been through first beta, I know what I need to fix, and I hope to get in a shape to post this week. I've got a direction on 9, as well. And I've got some editing on Summer of Giles to start soon.

But writing this entry is not getting any of that stuff written, so-- back to it.

But there are a couple of folks on this f-list I would be Delighted to see jump in here. In particular, (cough Water Hold Me Down cough and De Profundis .)

I was surprised to get the following comment on "Lost Boys" today from someone who saw it on [livejournal.com profile] snapenews:

Do you know about the Snape after DH fest? The community is here:

http://community.livejournal.com/snape_after_dh/

Your story would fit one of the prompts for the fest, "ghost snape." It's not too late to claim that prompt and post your story as part of the fest. Posting starts on October 15 and ends at the end of the month.

Lots of fans want more Snape.

I checked with the mods of the comm, and they graciously agreed I could post my story as part of their ficathon, even though part of it had already been posted, but only if I agreed not to post anything else until October 15th, when their posting period begins. And also if I could assure them it would be complete by Nov 1st, which I think will be no problem.

I had already said here, before finding out about this, that I would be updating every Friday or Saturday until it was completely posted, which would mean posting the next bits on the 12th or 13th.

So, I ask friends, and anyone else cruising by who cares to participate, what should I do?

I'm posting two fragments behind the cut, mostly so they're easy to link to as backstory when I post my Ethan story for the Antique Roman ficathon. These are the two brief scenes featuring Ethan from last year's nano novel-- they hold up surprisingly well, even without the rest of the tale around them. I'm having fun taking my story from a whole new angle now; oddly, having to make it stand on its own has done wonders to the diction and pacing and everything else. I don't feel so bogged down following Everybody I've dragged in-- no documentary here, thanks-- or explaining everything endlessly.

Though maybe I got that out of my system last night....

Anyway, here they are. I'm also taking volunteers to beta this ficathon story-- should have a good completed Part 1 of 3 available on google documents by tomorrow. Send me your e-mail if I don't already have it and I'll add you to the list of people who can see, and mock, said document.

These fragments are fair game for mockery, of course, whether you choose to beta the other or not. Have at.

I'll screen this entry's comments to protect your email address privacy. If I figure out how.

Here is the final part of my [livejournal.com profile] tenyearsofbuffy ficathon entry. Thanks again to everyone for reading and commenting. If anyone knows other ghost!Snyder fics, I'd love to read some other takes on this. Please send them my way.

Special thanks for this section go to the following: [livejournal.com profile] rahirah, [livejournal.com profile] clavally, [livejournal.com profile] rainkatt, and [livejournal.com profile] antennapedia. In addition, the gracious lady [livejournal.com profile] theblackmare drew the short straw this time and read the final, final draft as well. This story is much better for their intervention. And I know I'm getting to be a better writer by listening to them. All remaining mistakes are still my own.

Here, at last, is Part 2 of my [livejournal.com profile] tenyearsofbuffy ficathon entry. Yes, I know I said it would only be 2 parts, but the rewrite took some new turns. It really will be only 4 though. With an epilogue, tacked on to the 4th part.

Many thanks go to the following for perceptive comments and helpful advice: [livejournal.com profile] rahirah, [livejournal.com profile] clavally, [livejournal.com profile] theblackmare, [livejournal.com profile] rainkatt, [livejournal.com profile] gillo, [livejournal.com profile] slaymesoftly, [livejournal.com profile] partri65. Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] antennapedia for final, final beta. All remaining mistakes are my own, of course.

Spoilers/ Time period: End of Season 3 to Start of Season 5.
Please note: the rest of this story takes place early in the summer after Season 4. Takes a while for those ghost batteries to warm up, okay?

Here's my first ficathon entry, for [livejournal.com profile] tenyearsofbuffy. The prompt was my own, and will be revealed at the end of this first part. Many and sincere thanks for their invaluable comments and critical readings go to [livejournal.com profile] rahirah, [livejournal.com profile] clavally, [livejournal.com profile] rainkatt and [livejournal.com profile] antennapedia-- the latter for reading through multiple versions, including the final draft. All mistakes remaining are my own. They did try.

The minutes are ticking down on the [livejournal.com profile] tenyearsofbuffy ficathon deadline, and since I not only posted several prompts but also Picked one of them because it was whispering to me, I feel like I should try to finish it.

It's a strange story, and I'm starting to have some POV shifts which are more jarring than usual because the main narrator is, well, a bit-- dead. But I can't tell the story only from his POV. And the other characters are even more lively in comparison with the main character's very circumscribed situation.

Anyway, if someone would like to have a look at the first half, I'd really appreciate it. I also have some preliminary notes, though I have by now departed quite radically from that outline. But some of the questions I wanted to think about while writing might be helpful. I should say that I make a distinction between a beta for grammar, which I can do pretty well on my own, and one for larger issues and ideas, which we all could use help on from time to time. I'm happy to get any level of reading anyone cares to do though-- and to obligate myself to returning the favor, of course.

In the meantime, to distract myself from the growing disquiet of my first ficathon deadline-- what was Your first ficathon like? I know I have some old Pros on this Flist-- what's your favorite ficathon moment?

ps: health update: Hand is getting better-- still stiff, but I played the re-arranged piece well tonight on the actual instrument in this church, though I had to transpose it down a step to avoid a truly awful out of tune note. What with the ice and snow, nobody's going to get out and tune this puppy before Saturday night. I think it's actually better than the set arrangement of "Simple Gifts" I've been playing for months. I'm just really afraid I'm going to get lost and suddenly be in the wrong key when I do it for real. Ah well.
