Weekend was crazy busy, and I ended up with a spoons crash on Sunday midafternoon. Ended up skipping church.

It was a really good weekend, though.

Mind you, it's now quarter to ten and I'm not yet in bed.

Going now.

Communal Creators mini round

On a whim, I signed up for a week-long round of Creating over at [community profile] communal_creators, a community for working on creative projects. The current round is 7 days, starting today. I signed up for "60 minutes a day averaged over the week". It's honour-based and basically an incentive to work on my projects while others do the same, so you can cheer on each other.

My current projects
  • patchwork: add the lining and back of my table cloth, join with front, quilt them together

  • clothing: sew a pair of the boxer shorts: pieces are cut -> sew them

  • bookbinding: I have 2 projects going on:
    a. 2 copies of SassySnowperson's The Dwarf Queen: currently the text block is almost done, to do: add endpapers + sand edges + add headband and spine support, create case, join textblocks and cases
    b. 3 copies of a 2-part series (currently secret because it's a surprise for the author who's a friend of mine), i.e. 6 books, to do: sew the signatures of 3× part 2 together; for all 6: add endpapers, glue & round, sand edges, add headband & spine support. create all 6 cases, join textblocks and cases

  • I've been on a streak lately, and I want to continue it.

    Tablecloth
The fabric for my tablecloth has been lying in my fabric box for years because the project was too daunting – I have never done proper patchwork before (just sewn 2 fabrics together in alternating stripes from which I made a wool bag for my mom's knitting), and of course it wanted the result to be pretty ... I now started with a railfence pattern. It's far from perfect. The individual squares weren't all the same size, and I didn't always keep the same seam allowance, so the result isn't a square anymore but a rectangle. I figure I'll rectify that with adding asymmetrical facing on the edges, for which I have yet to buy the fabric, but that's a small matter. I'm really happy so far with my first patchwork project. Done is better than perfect.

    Clothing
Back in my teens I actually pretty regularly made my own clothing, mostly scene clothes you couldn't get in shops, but not only. Most of the time I didn't buy patterns but drafted my own. I want to start that again, so I'm sewing boxershorts in the hope that they'll be more durable than the ones I can buy.
It reminds me that while I never found the patience necessary for knitting, I do love sewing.

    Bookbinding
My printer ran out of toner last year and since then I had so many other unrelated expenses that buying a replacement was an unnecessary luxury, so I held off any significant bookbinding projects and only made typesets in the meantime. Now I started it off again. Due to the choice of projects I now have 8 books going on more or less parallelly, 6 of which actually need to be done at the same time so I can make sure they're consistent. It's a lot, but also not too much so far, and I'm very much looking forward to holding these books in my hands (and sending them to the author and another friend).

Summary:

Shiva pushes, so Dinah can put it behind.

Distraction from Grief

Move. Evaluate. Decide. Commit.

Shiva was making her work through her grief for Sensei in the way that mattered, now that they had foiled Cheshire's plan. Both of them excelled in the Arts, but the difference was being felt in every muscle, joint, and tendon as Dinah worked through the spar.

Shiva was a master, effortless in blending her many forms to always meet any rally that Dinah made, preventing Dinah from winning. Yet, Dinah also recognized that Shiva was having to rely on that blending to keep the upper hand.

In a formal, single style spar, Dinah and Shiva would likely be evenly matched.

Like this?

Dinah had to smile, a genuine one, to be pushed so far, so hard, so long.

Was that what Shiva had been waiting for? As the next move saw Dinah on the mats and Shiva pinning her, full length, hand in knife-strike pose at her throat.

"You choose life, not dwelling on death," Shiva purred, and damned if that didn't make Dinah remember other aspects of living that were worthwhile.

"Care to live a little with me, grab a hot soak, some good food?"

"Sensualist."

And yet, they moved together in that plan.

Summary:

So, men. Maybe Stella was over that.

*

This story digs deep into the situation implied in the phrase, "I swing both Rays," in that Stella always has, and so does Fraser. Eventually, after some lovely family tension and gloriously due South coincidences, they find their way to a dynamic sort of domestic peace, in defiance of all the canon's fear of limerence.

This was very, very good for my heart, with its rampant bisexuality and careful, thoughtful exploration of how these characters -- some of whom have solid reasons at the outset not to like each other very much -- find attraction, and joy, and above all banter. The banter is fucking golden. I love Fraser's voice, and this reflects it; I love RayK when he's flustered, and there is plenty to fluster him here; I love Vecchio when he is sharp and sweet and sardonic, and oh my heart.

And. Possibly most importantly, Stella. I have never spent much time thinking about her, but how I adore her in this piece: incisive, driven, sure of herself even when things are going completely bananas all around her, because women are the real straight men in due South, except when they're Frannie. (Who is also great here, don't get me wrong.) Stella's family works very well in their role in the narrative, both as foils of what her parents will tolerate (Francis!) and as what they thought Stella should be (ah, Jean, heartbreaking to get everything right). Stella with her view of reality that isn't quite the parareality of due South -- she may talk to Dief, but she doesn't entirely believe he understands her, nor that he talks back, despite the convictions of the people around her. She lives on a different wavelength than Fraser, and even RayV, as the quintessential Woman Who Got Away, but it is deeply satisfying that here, she doesn't get away, and instead, she gets everything she ever wanted.

Every single bowling reference made me make the :D face. Thank you, sixthlight, for saving Stella and Vecchio from the bad, bad canon, and instead delivering them to this much better situation.

13 books new to me, and save for one mystery, all fantasy. Man, fantasy is just eating SF's lunch. Not that that will be reflected in what I actually review.
