In which Wee Hob earns a Railroading Merit Badge, and once again demonstrates the motto "Be Prepared."

For those who were worried, my apologies. I did indeed survive the Trailblazer District Spring Camporee. And I must say I am highly impressed with the new Scoutmaster and the new crop of Webelos that came in last month. Most of them were this Scoutmaster's boys when he was Cubmaster, and the training and discipline really have carried over. They aren't like the squirrelly little ADHD impaired guys who came in with Wee Hob. They are in fact a good influence on some of the older boys.

Anyway, it was a great couple of days. Some of you will remember that last weekend we had our annual Turkey and Ham dinner fundraiser. So, care to take a guess at what was on the menu this weekend? For dinner Friday night we had-- turkey chili over hot dogs. Shredded white meat turkey is actually not a bad hamburger substitute. Good to know, as I have quite a bit in the refrigerator. Saturday morning, fried ham (of course) with eggs and biscuits. Saturday night, spaghetti with still more shredded turkey for the meat, also very good. More ham and eggs Sunday morning, of course. Sandwiches (with lunchmeat, not leftovers) for lunches.

The boys had a great time Saturday doing all the different activities the railroad had put together for them. It's an all volunteer organization, dedicated to preserving and passing on this bit of history. They do runs from Connorsville, Indiana to Metamora, and we took that trip Sunday. Here's a link.

Wee Hob especially enjoyed digging bricks out of a big dirt pile-- I never quite got what that was about, but I think a building had been knocked down in the rail yard and they are collecting the bricks for use in reconstructing or repairing other buildings. They also got to ride on the hand cars to get from one end of the yard to the other. They also watched more videos from the 1950s about such fascinating things as brake systems, car types, etc., than human beings should be allowed to watch. I wimped out after a couple of hours and hiked the mile or so back to the campground with some of our other adult leaders. Didn't get a lot of writing done, but the tent was nice and warm during the day. Sadly, that was not the case Saturday night. Friday night it rained and got windy, but it was actually warmer and better than Saturday.

Sadly, too, Wee Hob has not gotten much better at this packing thing. Despite repeated reminders and specific questions, he failed to pack a rain poncho, a coat, a sweatshirt-- seeing a pattern here? It was 85 degrees when we left, but that's no excuse. Of course, our almost Eagle decided that layers meant multiple t-shirts and shorts, which is what he wore all weekend. I took pity on Wee Hob and gave him my sweatshirt. Since he is fast outgrowing me, he had better get it together before he's too big for me to bail out. Then I'll be stealing His clothes.....

Anyway, I'm back, kinda sick today and working from home. Will do my best to catch up soon.

One vacation my Son packed 11 pairs of pants, two T shirts and no underwear. Upon discovery, my husband took him to the local "Cheapo Deop" to buy used T's and a packet of underwear.

It is a universal boy thing - to pack inappropriately.

It sounds like fun, though I would have hated the camping part. My SO would have been in heaven with all the train stuff. :-) And go you for putting the responsibility for his own stuff on Wee Hob. How else will he ever figure it out? I still have male employees showing up for orientations without stuff, and telling me that their wives forgot to pack it for them. (We have a number of people who work at client sites elsewhere in the country, but try to get them here for orientation, especially members of the sales team. They're sent packets, and are expected to show up with filled-out forms and/or questions. So many don't.) (Can you tell it irks me?)

Feel better!

And I say way-hey-hey
It's just an ordinary day
And it's all your state of mind
At the end of the day
You've just got to say
It's all right!

[livejournal.com profile] enotsola turned me on to Great Big Sea but it still kind of rare to run across other people who know them, what with me being quite far away from eastern Canada.

[livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs gave me my first taste of GBS in a "Death Songs" playlist she put up on a file sharing site: "General Taylor." Later, [livejournal.com profile] headrush100 put up a wider sampling on a similar site and I downloaded them to have a listen. As soon as I actually have money, I need to buy some of their albums legitimately, but for now, they're well represented on one of my "Cheer Up" playlists.

It sounds like a great time. I so glad you both enjoyed it. And a very creative use of turkey!
