Farewell, Friends

Well, tomorrow night, or obscenely early Monday morning, I am off for the wilds of Indiana, and hence for the wilder wilds of the Milwaukee airport, and then to Denton, Texas. My mother's 75th birthday is Monday, and my little brother and his kids should be there later Monday night. At the end of the week, I will be seeing a guy I went to high school with and have not seen for over 20 years. We've been chatting online this week a bit, and I'm amazed how much we have in common after all this time, in geeky-ness (he's a Buffy fan, for instance) and in sad life experience (divorce scars everyone in some ways.)
I'm excited about it all, and nervous. First, it is HOT down there this time of year, and Denton, Texas is not much of a mecca of cool things to do anyway. I'll be pretty car-less, except the days when my brother is around. I'd planned to do a lot of hiking and swimming, but my mom is making unhappy noises at this plan. I'd forgotten how controlling she can be, since I've been away and out of her reach in that way for so long. But I am absolutely not going to let her hold us hostage all week. She's threatened to make me listen to some talk radio host all week, who will convince me I should not vote for the Democrat whose name neither she nor this host can pronounce properly. (I made the mistake of mentioning my desire to vote for Obama in the Kentucky primary, as if it even mattered by then, and have yet to hear the end of it. I don't remember my mom being a bigot, or a nut case, but age affects us all in strange ways, I suppose.)
But mom has already agreed to have a grandson/ grandmother bonding night so I can go out with my old friend. I believe card games will figure into the evening somehow, for them. So I am glad for that, and nervously optimistic. I was fond of the boy all those years ago, and from what I can tell comparing notes the past couple of weeks, the man has grown up into someone pretty neat. I expect it will hit me, even more than being in my old hometown after all these years, just how many years have gone by, seeing all the changes.
I am looking forward to showing Wee Hob a little bit of where my side of the family came from. We looked on google maps last night, where all we would be going. He's pretty excited about the plane already.
And here's that alcohol meme going around. But I have to protest-- a real drunkard would not be able to remember all the obscure information on this quiz. I feel a little penalized for having such a good memory for completely useless information. And for the record, I have never drunk over half the drinks on that list. Not that I remember, anyway.

See everyone this week if I can find wifi access somewhere; otherwise, I'll check in by August 5th. Happy week, everyone.
