I've been corresponding tonight with someone who wants to organize a new judged fanfic awards in the Harry Potter fandom. I've judged a bit now, enough to know what it's like from a judge's side, but I've never seen what the mods do behind the scenes to make assignments, tabulate scores, distribute comments (if they do), and all the other housekeeping duties involved. I also can speculate a bit, but I don't really know all the details that go into selecting categories, taking nominations, limiting noms, etc.

I do know, however, that I have several people on this very f-list who do have this experience. Besides "Don't do it!" what would you say to someone just starting out? And where else would you suggest we go to learn more from people who know?

Thanks.

In other news, we're all packed. This time tomorrow night, I will be in a tent. Probably with mosquitos. In the rain. Because you know how you can predict it will rain on any given weekend? Check to see if Troop 8 will be camping. If the answer is yes, then yes. It will rain. Buckets, probably.

And Ch7 of In Loco is to betas, and I will be working on Ch8 writing longhand in a notebook when I'm not redirecting teenagers. Can't wait.

Okay, I've pretty much run through all the cool HP fic on several rec lists. Amazing stuff. So, I'm back. And I'm moved, though you wouldn't know it from the boxes still stacked in my living room. Though the place has now decided to go condo, meaning I'll be doing this again in a year or two. Sigh.

Moving now to important matters: I agreed to judge a fanfic competition, and I have No Idea where I put the link, or which one it is. I'm not finding the assignment in my e-mail. I believe the deadline is August 17th-- no prob, as I can do it Saturday while the Boy Scout, First Class is off camping with his pals. Heat exhaustion is just so not a good look for me.

If I'm flaking on You-- Please reply with a comment and a link and smack me upside the head. I really want to do this before I get the "Where's my scores?" e-mail. I know I had at least 3 character-specific assignments to judge fics for, and that one of them was Giles.

If I'm not flaking on you, but you feel a desire to build my character, that's fine, too. Though my employer is at present doing a fair amount of that.

That is all. Greetings to new friends-- I'm not usually this flaky or boring. And hugs to old friends-- hope all of you are well.
