I started killing time over lunch posting "Two Dads" and "Lost Boys" on ff.net. One odd thing-- it seems to be ignoring my *** between segments. What do people use to show a break between sections within a chapter? And is it possible to get that in there by editing the file already uploaded, or do I have to delete and resubmit?

Thanks to anyone who can point me the right direction.

Oh-- here's my page over there, for anyone who wants it: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1292602/

In much more serious news, my son's friend's mom, the one who's had cancer all year, and who recently was given what they thought was a clean bill of health, was moved to hospice yesterday. Those who are inclined to pray or send positive energy to her and her family, please do. I am mostly doing the avoidance thing, because otherwise I get so angry at life's unfairness that I can't think straight. And I am not looking forward to telling Wee Hob tonight.

I better get back to it. Hugs to all.

ff.net deletes all *s (as well as some other characters) for some reason. I find the best way is to insert a horizontal line, like so

between sections. You can do that by going to the "Documents" section, edit the documents (the horizontal line is inserted with one of the buttons, next to the bold and italic things) and then under Stories->Edit->Content/Chapters choosing "Replace chapter" way at the bottom and replacing the content of a chapter with the edited document.

Did that make sense...?

So very sorry to hear about your son's friend's mom.

I feel so sad for your son's friend. This has to be so very hard.

As far as section breaks, I use MWMWMW. It seems to work.

If you need to make a change to the "document", it doesn't automatically update the associated "story". Very frustrating. You have to delete the story and resubmit it.

Actually, I have gotten it to replace the verson of a chapter with the corrected document. But yes, it is a manual process. Thanks, though.

Scroll up in this post-- beer_good has the procedure. Basically edit the document on the docs page, save it, then go to the stories page where you can add new chapters-- there's a spot at the bottom for replacing new chapters. Just substitute in the edited version of the chapter, and you're all set.

Oh, ok. I can sort it out from that.

Still, it would be nice if it was a dynamic link, where the story just displayed the current version whatever it was, without having to explicitly update.

Sending positive thoughts and best wishes to your son's friends' mother and her entire family, and to you and Wee Hob as well.

If you can find a way to handle the anger, try to do something that isn't avoidance mode. These folks need all the support they can get. Hell, they may even need a safe place to be angry, too.

Whatever you can do or whatever you can't handle, though, I'm sending hugs and positive thoughts to everyone involved. I've also got a couple friends who are big on prayer and candle-lighting. I'll get them right on it, too.

Thanks. I am available to do stuff for the family, but at work there wasn't much I could do but avoid. It's going to be a rough next few weeks, I think.

Thanks to you, and your candle lighting friends.

Sorry to hear about your friend's mom. These things are never easy.
If you need to avoid it for your own peace of mind, do so. But if you can, you might try to visit with her- particularly if you know her well. :(

You and the Wee Hob will be in my thoughts this afternoon.

I have been reading your fan fiction. My goodness it is bringing tears to my eyes. I haven’t reviewed but I will, because I’m not done reading it. I’m here at work toggling back and forth since yesterday. I just wanted to make sure I had this page marked to reading the story you were recommending.

I also will keep your son’s friend and you in my prayers. Take care.

Oh-- thanks for reading-- I'll look forward to your review. It is kind of cool to see just how many people are reading this fic on the stats page, and doing the math from LJ (how many reviews x how many actual readers likely saw it). Glad you're enjoying it.

I finished and reviewed. I only started reading and writing fan fiction after DH and I’m finding a lot of great stuff, such as, your story. I had heard many horror stories and was reluctant at first, but glad I started reading. I am learning new stuff about the fan fiction world, such as what a beta reader is. I hope you don’t mind me asking about what one review said about you posting on fanfic.net and how it can irritate people. Why? But I do agree that I like ff.net counter and the alert system. Again thanks for your story and glad you added that ship with Snape and Charity Burbage, I had never heard of it till now.

Oh-- you're about where I was a year or so ago, then. Welcome! I actually came out to the internet because of Buffy the Vampire Slayer of all things, but I didn't read Harry Potter fic until right before DH came out. In both cases, I started with big sites like ff.net and couldn't get past all the subliterate writing, and the gazillions of stories to sift through. I lucked out and found some better sites and some excellent authors as a result, and that led me to LJ.

As to ff.net, the conversation with [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs in the comments of this post: http://hobgoblinn.livejournal.com/41911.html explains it best. I was leery of the site mostly because I'd heard liz call it "The Pit of Voles" several times in passing-- I thought it was because the site had pulled down some of her writing without warning or notice, possibly because it changed its mind about what constituted adult content. Turns out I was only partly right, as you see.

But [livejournal.com profile] sunsethill was mostly commenting on how I was dragging my feet about dealing with the mechanics of getting my writing uploaded to the site, as I had mentioned it several times of late. It turned out not to be as bad as I'd feared-- not as bad as some e-fiction archives I've seen.

I'll get over and friend you back in a minute. Thanks for reading and reviewing. What kinds of fic are you interested in? I have gravitated towards Buffy/Giles in the Buffy realm and Snape/Hermione in the HP realm, mostly because of Giles and Snape. Whatever else one may say about it, intimate relationships have a lot of potential for exploring interesting characters and seeing how they react under extreme situations and stimuli. I can't write it, but some of it's fun to read. I prefer genfic though.

Anyway, you may see me rec stuff from time to time as I come across new stuff(or check my tags for "fic rec" and see what comes up), and [livejournal.com profile] clavally also has a "Master Fic Rec List" which includes some HP (mostly Snape/Hermione) recs.

Welcome to fandom, and thanks again for reading.

Hob

Thanks for answering my questions. So far the only fan fiction I’m interested in is HP, but that is because there is so much to read. I do plan on looking at others later on. I do a lot of piggy back and read others favorites. I plan on reading “Coda to an Epilogue” after I finish a great one I found on someone else’s favorites list. Since Snape is my favorite character I tend to read stories with him. My favorites are the ones that keep him Snapey, like yours. I really don’t like one sided angst stories with Snape pining for Lily or anyone else, if it is both I don’t mind. I also like some of the humor stories. I like a good laugh. But the more I read the more I know what I like and don’t like.

What I am writing are childhood stories of Lily and Severus. I don’t know why, but I am. I am also writing a lot of dialogue, which is usually not my style. I don’t have a beta so my mistakes are my own, but I figured if I didn’t post I would never move. You know how it is sometimes you can keep on revising and revising a story. So I just did it.

Yeah, there's a lot to read out there. Be aware, as my rec says, that Coda, and all [livejournal.com profile] mistful's fanfic is coming down on September 6, 2008 when she goes legit. You should friend her journal and follow her exploits as a newly published author-- she's great fun, and you'll learn a lot about the business while being entertained.

My first fanfic, "Summer" was about 3 years in the making, and the final version is much changed from the original posting of it. I even make changes from time to time when I reread anything now. It's my LJ, so I can do that. I was surprised how much things had changed in so short a time when I compared the "final" versions of "Two Dads" to the LJ version out there today, only a month or so after first posting.

As you make friends or find people saying sensible things as feedback, try to get some of them to beta work for you-- it's more than just fixing grammar; it's helpful to figure out what you're trying to do with a story, when you discuss it with somebody else. And by all means read fic postmortems if writers leave them. That's another way to learn a lot and be more aware of the process.

You might also go friend [livejournal.com profile] keladry_lupin-- she's been putting out some great recommendations lately. Snape as santa is the most recent, and it's hilarious.
