Apologies to those who have already seen this on [livejournal.com profile] antennapedia's journal-- I have a number of friends now I know are not on her list, so I thought I'd share, too. This is a fantastic essay on POV in fandom. My comment may be of interest here, but really, the whole thread and comments are well worth a look. Enjoy.

Sadly, the poll mentioned is now closed. ETA: No, I just got word that there was an issue with the poll-owner's account which has been resolved. Have fun taking the poll.

I better get some work done, long as I'm here.

I saw that post as well last night. It was very interesting and enlightening, indeed. I was shocked to see that there are people who don't know that a narrator isn't a character in the story. We learnt that at school.

I've never had much of an issue with POV as far as 3rd or 1st. (Second is for Choose Your Own Adventure novels, IMHO) Yes, in 1P the author needs to be sufficiently researched and creative enough to make you believe they are a sixty year old man or a twelve year old girl. But if they don't do their homework they aren't going to write 3P well either, and sloppy storytelling is sloppy storytelling no matter who's doing the speaking. In my own writing, I have no preference except when things get smutty. Then 1P makes me way too giggly, particularly if I'm writing a male's POV.
