Yeah. I saw the birthdate in the profile, but the wording of your post made me wonder. It doesn't much affect me, as I don't write smut or anything I'd be worried about an underage person reading, but I know some people in fandom are sensistive to the age issue. Ah well, then. Carry on.

Yeah, I still live with my mom, and she still controls every aspect of my life. She really hates fanfiction - she thinks it's a waste of time and only stupid people write things that can't be published.

And I really hate her opinions of the matter.

I write fanfiction as a learning exercise-- focus on one aspect of writing I want to improve without having to get bogged down creating a Whole Consistent World on top of it (not that JKR got that bogged, at times. But I digress. And am not being entirely fair.)

And there has been a long tradition in literature of what we might today consider "fanfiction." Paradise Lost is fanfiction on the Bible (Fall of Man, redemption) right down to the applying fanfic correction in the person of a much fleshed out Lucifer. To give one notable example amongst many.

And until relatively recently, authors Didn't get paid, or get paid a lot, for their work. Many still don't. But you might bring up Sarah Rees Brennan (mistful as an example of a fanfic author whose experiences writing fanfic honed her skills enough to get her a big time writing contract.

The way I see it, fanfic is, if you find the right group of betas/ reviewers/ audience, a lot cheaper and more useful than a Creative Writing degree from university. And it is so much less a waste of time than, say, television.

I totally agree. I am so much better at writing now than I was when I first started, it's amazing. And it's always a learning experience - you actually have to do research, and think hard about plot and characterization.

At any rate, I'm just going to keep on as I've been keeping on - under her nose.
