The mood indicator (annoyed) is from a work matter. Maybe I could get a better word count if I did that work-based idea after all. Certainly have the inspiration/ fuel for it now.

Anyway, last night was pretty awful. So awful in fact that in the midst of a scene, the following happened (and since I am a word count whore, I kept it. It's fiction; the voices really aren't telling me what to do, so I say it counts):

A short fragment from an earlier night, then last night's take on the same material. Unedited, unbeta'd, read at your own risk, etc. Thanks again to [livejournal.com profile] sunsethill, who asked for it, and others who commented. I think I have a direction for this now.

This is Christmas day at the Potter's, Snape is a ghost, and the story when it's done is meant as a continuation to Lost Boys. Think that's about all you need to know. One thing I'd really like feedback on is how jarring the present/ past shifts are. I'm trying to capture echoes of one in the other, but I'm not sure how well I'm succeeding. May be a bit too echoey.

Also, what would Minerva transfigure Snape's wand into?

All right, back to it.

hobgoblinn: (nano 07)
Well, I got a very interesting scene with Severus and Minerva written tonight, one in which I get to do a little more with the Charity Burbage backstory-- a significant flashback to Snape cleaning out her office and having Minerva burst in on him and figure out that things are not as they appear. It fits into canon because they mutually agree that he has to obliviate her. But before he does, she gives him her ear and support, as a human and his friend, not as a “semi-sentient portrait with delusions of grandeur.”

I’m still trying to work out what this fic is going to be about. But it already has a couple of pretty cool scenes.

I think I'm really close to surpassing last year's entire word count for the month, if I haven't already.

ETA: just checked-- last year I got 26,591 by midnight on the 30th of November. So it's official: I've beaten last year's word count!

Hugs and happy writing to all.
hobgoblinn: (nano onegood)
Not as much today, but then, I spent most of the day helping the little old ladies with their afternoon bingo, and singing the night mass and listening to Wee Hob recount his brilliant camping triumphs and rock climbing adventures. He wore pretty much every scrap of clothing he packed, all weekend long, so he smelled like very Ripe boy scout when I picked him up.

We'll see what I can get going tomorrow. Progress meter says:

Anybody want to toss out ideas for my Lost Boys sequel? I'm wondering if anyone knows of a particular person or persons who survived the battle who might want to take some kind of revenge on Snape, or try to tap his Dark Arts knowledge for their own nefarious purposes.

It would really help my word count if I had this. I'm rapidly getting to being bogged down in 3 separate stories now. Sad, isn't it?

Hugs to all.

Hob

Well, looks like I made up a bit for my sloth yesterday, and I am now ready to call it a night. I put in 3011 words in the morning on my original fic. They are truly sucktastic. Then I started fresh with [livejournal.com profile] clavally at 3pm when we did our Virtual Write In and worked on a continuation to "Lost Boys"-- Snape going home with David and the family coming together for Christmas. And it occurs to me that maybe some people might be less than pleased that Snape survived, in any form. Or really pleased that revenge is not totally out of their reach, after all.....

We'll see where it all goes. I'll be busy with the Ladies Society Bingo tomorrow, and hearing all of Wee Hob's camping adventures after the night mass I sing (and that Wee Hob will doubtless sleep through). But hopefully I can get something banged out on one of these for a little while, maybe in the morning.

Hugs to my writer friends. And my reader ones, of course.

I really should not have drunk so much coffee at Panera all afternoon. I am ceasing to be capable of coherent thought, but am absolutely not sleepy....

hobgoblinn: (nano 07)
Well, my first virtual write-in went quite well. [livejournal.com profile] clavally the Pirate Wench was wonderful company, and we helped each other out a bit with encouragement and advice. I'd like to do another one, scheduled or not. If anyone is online and sees that I am, by all means send me a message, telling me to get back to work, if nothing else.

I could have used someone doing that last night. I wrote Zero words on the day. After I dropped off the dear Wee Hob with the scouts for his camping trip this weekend, I went home and got sucked into an old SS/HG fic "Falling Further In." It seems, as near as I can tell, to be the "Transformations Quartet" of the HP fandom-- brilliant and well worth reading, though it will probably never be finished. I am so glad this author put it out there, even as it is-- the voices, the relationships, the plot, the believable progression of the friendship between Snape and Hermione blossoming into something else, the multifaceted presentation of all the characters-- truly a tour de force. I do hope this author is out there somewhere writing, and getting paid for, original fiction. If anybody knows, by all means tell me. The ff.net version seems corrupted (some parts refuse to load) , but here's a good link: http://www.obscurusbooks.org/html/KazVL/FFI/

Well enough blather. I better get back to making up for yesterday night's sloth. Here's my contribution to my f-list's linguistic literacy:

I'll check in with a word count at the end of my writing day. Hugs to all.

Well, I got more scenes of my new idea written, still filling in the beginning more than trying to forge ahead, or anywhere else. Cool, though. And I have this to report. Remember a few weeks back, I reported Wee Hob was making a 9 in History? That would be, yes, a Nine, as in the number 91 less than 100. He got his grades today, and mirabile dictu, he has an 88! I am quite proud of the lad. And his lowest grade, a 72, while a D in this district's scale, is apparently more missing homework driven than ability. His teachers all pretty much adore him, even the one who has him for that lowest grade. We all agreed they have my permission to "kick his butt" when he needs it. And he seemed pleased to hear how much they like him and want him to do well. His new meds seem to be settling him a bit, too, thought it's too soon to say for sure.

I'm set to have a virtual write in Saturday afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] clavally-- my plan is to be at the Panera in Crestview Hills, KY from 3-5, and available online for anyone who wants to chat and distract me. My aim id is currently on my profile page. Join the fun.

Good night to all, and hugs to all writers, nano or otherwise, on my f-list.

Well, back to work after vacation meant a more realistic word count on the day. I also admit, I got sucked into reading an old HG/SS story (The Fire and the Rose). Really lovely. Ah well. Tonight I have a couple of meetings with Wee Hob's teachers, and I have to oversee his packing for what looks to be a very cold weekend with the Scouts. Hope he can go; he's complaining of a sore throat this morning.

I think I'm going to have to drop back and punt-- make some serious notes on how this original world is put together before I can do much more in it. Unless some other inspiration strikes me today....

Happy writing to all. Here's [livejournal.com profile] antennapedia's word widget:

Hob

Well, I got bogged down when I decided to let the Dursleys come home, so I decided to turn to a different story, the original idea I had. Not the work one-- I was enjoying being away from the Pit O' Vipers too much to visit there today, even for Art's sake. I had had written a bit of Unearned Luck some months ago when I first got the idea. I decided to write a "before that" segment, and was pleased to flesh out and deepen the original character and his relationships, see what kind of a life he will be leaving, and how he might feel about it. Also felt good that, sometimes, I write damned good openings. Got bogged down in the afternoon (plot and what it's about still don't seem to be on speaking terms, in any of my projects) and by early evening I was re-reading HG/SS fanfic off [livejournal.com profile] clavally's rec links page, and wondering if this stomach ailment I seem to be getting will abate by morning, as I surely will not get away with another day off for anything short of "barfing up a lung," as Mr. Bueller might put it.

Anyway, It was a pretty good vacation day, even with the Wee Hob underfoot for the morning. We have some new drugs for him now, too, though it's too soon to tell how well they'll work. But I live in hope.

The obligatory progress meter, with thanks to [livejournal.com profile] antennapedia. As the Nano folks say, "if you think you're writing a novel, we think so...." So shh.. don't tell them I'm switching around. I'm not counting any words not newly written this month, though, even if I am doing substantial edits to the material as I reread.

It was a tough day. I was off work, so I should have been able to get going, right?

Not so much.

I got an impressive word count, but they're all such useless words. I know I felt this way during Lost Boys, but the scope there was much narrower. I just have to hang on through it, waiting for what it's about and plot to hold a meeting, hammer out their differences, and inform me of the results.

Pray they do it soon. Sigh.

Well, despite interruptions, I did manage to rack up some words. Not very good words, but I can sort of see a direction now, and I imagine I can round out the count later when I shore up things like point of view. I also scored some cool new icons today. [livejournal.com profile] ishtaritu's is still my fav, but I thought this one more appropriate today.

And the word count meter says:

Think that's where I'll leave it tonight. I'm hoping to convince wee hob to do a write in with me tomorrow at some point in the afternoon. We also have new hiking boots to buy (as someone's wee feet keep growing) and a doctor's check up to see how he's doing on his meds after all the fun of the past month or so. 'Night, all.
hobgoblinn: (wrisomifu 07)
And the plot continues to limp forward. When I figure out if this story has a point, I will be happier. If, of course, it even does.

I'm turning in early tonight, mostly to reread HBP. The book is like a black hole to me-- I've read it at least 3 times, yet little of it springs to mind when I try to recall it later. But I think it would help my lack of progress if I had some handle on where these characters were before I stole them. So this is where I'll leave the count tonight.

Calling all Nano Participants, [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo members and [livejournal.com profile] wrisomifu members, and anyone else who might be interested:

If they are holding any Nano write-ins in Greater Cincinnati, I have yet to hear of it. Our city is so incredibly lame. But [livejournal.com profile] clavally the pirate queen and I were discussing the possibility of doing virtual write-ins, and sharing the suffering a bit.

I have never been to a real write-in, much less a virtual one, so first-- what do they do at the real ones? Anybody know?

And second, how could we make a virtual write-in fun? Any ideas?

Third, [livejournal.com profile] clavally and I are on for next Saturday from 3-5pm Eastern US time-- I'll be at the Campbell County Library(ETA: Nope-- Panera has free wifi, and I have it on good authority that Snacks are an integral part of the write-in experience. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] ishtaritu) using their wireless (mostly to get my miserable self out of the house. Wee Hob will be camping with the Scouts, and I am so not going to brave the cold for the joy of the Great Outdoors.) But I will also be off work Monday and Tuesday, so if anyone wanted to suggest a time on those days, I would be all for it. We can exchange aim usernames and do whatever else folks do to encourage each other at these events. I just updated my profile with my aim id-- so if anyone sees me online and wants to distract me, feel free. Be aware it's one I also use for work, though, and try not to bug me on real work days.

I'm actually at the library now, as well, so feel perfectly free to bug me until 5 today Eastern US time....

I better get back to it. There's a plot here somewhere. And possibly a theme. I just know it.....
hobgoblinn: (nano 07)
I think I have wandered more than enough for one night. This isn't going anywhere, but since when has that stopped me? Maybe I'll work on some other things tomorrow. I have the weekend, then Monday and Tuesday off. Surely something will come of it.

BTW-- is anyone else following Moon Magic? Snape and Faith (and Riley and Willow, and hey, a spell gone wrong, which explains why Willow's there). [livejournal.com profile] lit_gal is absolutely Nailing both Snape and Faith's voices here. I haven't seen that many crossovers that navigate both worlds well-- I told [livejournal.com profile] lit_gal I thought it was because combining the two worlds made the ridiculous aspects of both reach a kind of critical mass. But this is really off to a promising start. I highly recommend it.
hobgoblinn: (smack_me_nano2006)
The great fun of Nano, it seems to me, is figuring out what to write about. As time's getting short, I thought I'd throw out the variously profitable (and not) ways I could spend my time and see what wise advice I get.

Option 1 - finish The 06 novel. I know [livejournal.com profile] gillo will like this one, as it will ensure her limitless insomnia remedy material for the next month, at least.

Downside-- most of it's written. If this story has 50K MORE words in it, [livejournal.com profile] gillo will swim the Atlantic and the Ohio River to strangle me.

I should say-- this is a Post-Chosen, not Comics compliant, Giles, Willow, Ethan genfic.

Option 2 - Well, Damn. The last "Harry Potter Short Story" I wrote (which will be completed and up this weekend, including the postmortem) turned out to be a LOT longer than it seemed. I haven't done a count of the individual parts lately, but I think it got well over 20K, possibly as high as 30K words. So, I have this other idea, an age-regression fic. I know they've probably been done to death, but it's a genre I've liked ever since I read my first fanfic, which happened to be Reni's "Baby Love" in the Buffy Fandom. And I think I can find some things to say with it. I have about 5k worth of notes/start on that.

Downside-- another fanfic with a vague idea where it's going = another unfinished novel length thing to edit later, like the 06 installment. Last year, at least I had a theme, of sorts.

Option 3 - Something original. I have an idea for a short story (we know how those tend to go, with me) and a novel length one as well. The novel length one involves an older man, possibly a priest, who wakes up one day to find he's no longer human. (Not a cockroach, either; that's been done.) He's become something the people like him who help him adapt to his new state think fit the definition of the "fair folk" of legend. He can't go back to his old life, he doesn't know how his new life fits in with everything he's ever believed, and there are dark powers closing in.

Downside-- I'd have to be more careful about sharing it, as I really want to write this story myself, not let some internetz crawler steal it.

Option 4 - some of my long time friends may remember my work adventures of some months past. I said at the time my work group should write it up for nano this year, "as truth is stranger than fiction." Particularly after a bunch of sleep-deprived, overstressed programmer types have been at it.

Downside-- my supervisor may be wanting to write this up himself. And if I do it, current stresses are going to find their way into the mix. And well, if someone found out what I was writing....

But upside-- I have a name and a motto for the fictional company-- Delphi Information Systems. "We put the D in dysfunctional" (and oh the scope for jokes on seeking wisdom from an Oracle....)

So-- should we do the poll now? Ticky boxes?
(note: my two votes are for two anonymice cow orkers who couldn't vote on their own. If I had a strong opinion, I wouldn't be putting up this poll.)

[Poll #1077581]
hobgoblinn: (silence)
Well, I broke down and signed up for Nanowrimo again. Actually, just updated my account info from last year. Another year older, possibly wiser. Apparently not wise enough, as I'm seriously considering doing this again, just having come off a month of "Lost Boys" madness.

I'm thinking of an original bit of writing this year, or working on several ideas I have and seeing where they go. And using my word counts, as last year, to finish up stuff that had been hanging about undone. That's how Summer came to be finished, after all. So perhaps Last Year's Novel will get some work this November, so that my lovely beta [livejournal.com profile] gillo will have more to work with. Like an ending. Then I can go back and apply her superior knowledge of geography, and many other things, to the earlier sections. It's not as if I will get anywhere near 50k words legitimately anyway; I may as well use the challenge to do what I think will help me most. I'm also signed up for mini-nanowrimo, or will be when they open it up for pledged word counts in another week or so.

So, who's going "once more into the breach" with me, dear friends? Let me know so I can make you a buddy on my home page there. Also, what are you doing to prepare? If you've done it in the past but have now come to your senses, what advice do you have for the sanity impaired among us?
hobgoblinn: (Default)
I just read where Madeline L'Engle has died at age 88. One of my first favorite authors, and her themes and images and ideas still resonate with me. I realized that she must have been older than I am now when she wrote A Wrinkle in Time. Gives me hope that I may still grow in wisdom enough to write things worth saying. If I get off my ass and Just Do It. I'm strongly considering an original plot for nanowrimo this year, instead of fanfic.

And I also had to put my ancient pussycat to sleep this afternoon. Wee Hob is moody and sad, and her younger feline companion, a brain damaged eternal adolescent cat named Samwise is wandering about the house, confused that he can't find his friend anywhere. Her full name was "Her Most Exalted Ladyship, Queen Mab" because when I got her she was so very dignified and tolerant of the antics of younger cat (real adolescent then). It was shortened to Ladyship, then M'lady, and finally just Lady. She was the sweetest and most patient beast I have ever known, and I still remember how thrilled Wee Hob was when I got him back and she chose His bed to sleep on and adopted him as her own kitten. One of my friends who is sensitive to the thoughts and ways of animals said that she considered us all "her kittens", and she felt very content to look after us and shake her head at our strange ways.

I feel guilty and sad I couldn't do more for her, but even if I could have afforded the cost of trying to save her, it was a long shot at best, as her organs seemed to be failing, and without extensive bloodwork we couldn't have even known what to treat, or if it was treatable. But we made sure she didn't suffer, and Wee Hob has decided that was a good thing. We buried her next to his godparents' dog, who had always wanted a kitty cat of her own. We never met this dog, but we have heard all the stories. And now Wee Hob will have a place he can visit her.

Anyway, that's my life for today.
